If unreasonable structural requirements (façade arrangement, border development, cellars), partial use or matters relating to monument protection make external insulation impractical, today's well-engineered interior insulation systems provide safe and sustainable solutions. They should consist of capillary-active materials that are open to diffusion, in order to force any invasive moisture to the surface of building elements, where it will evaporate. This is a sure-fire way of preventing problems relating to damp or mould.
Good internal insulation materials and accessories should also be demonstrably free from emissions. In other words, they should not give out any damaging materials. In order to optimise fire prevention, non flammable products (building material class A1) should be used, which do not generate any harmful gases in the event of fire.
In respect to the environment, all system products should be made from harmless raw materials (such as minerals) and be easy to dispose of or recycle. Special guidelines for thermal and damp protection should also be adhered to.
